About the Pilates Method
The Pilates Method was developed by Joseph Hubertus Pilates at the turn of the century due to his dissatisfaction with existing methods of physical training. Joseph Pilates studied both Eastern and Western exercise disciplines. Eastern methods such as yoga emphasize mental relaxation, breathing and suppleness; while Western methods generally seek to maximize strength and endurance. In creating the Pilates Method, Joseph Pilates combined integral qualities from both cultures for a complete and ideal exercise form. The Pilates Method demands simultaneous bringing together of control, breathing body awareness, flexibility, strength, precision and alignment. The combining of mind, body and spirit is a fast growing area of interest particularly in present day life. Originally, the Pilates Method attracted primarily dancers and athletes, but has now moved into mainstream America in its appeal and recognition.
One of the benefits of the Pilates Methodis versatility; there are a minimum of 30 exercises on each of the 5 main apparatus that can be adopted for individuals of any fitness level or age.
The Pilates Method is a cooperative effort between instructor and client to pinpoint weak areas of the body and strengthen them in order to increase muscular efficiency, bringing one's body closer to its fullest potential. It is safe and effective modality for correcting muscular skeletal imbalances in the body, preventing injuries and aiding in promoting the rehabilitation process. The Pilates Method has existed for over 85 year and has been recognized by many prominent physicians, physical therapists, chiropractors, sports/fitness trainers, choreographers and performers.
The Pilates Method incorporates a mind/body focus -- viewing the bodyas a whole and not dividing it into separate parts. In its variety of rhythmic exercises promote elongated and balanced muscles and are noted for turning the abdominals, hips and lower back into the "Powerhouse", the body's center of foundation of strength. Joseph Pilates did not believe in mindless repetition of movement, he preferred precise and concentrated moves. For this reason, very few exercises are done more than 10 times and there is minimal use of "sets", thus allowing one to accomplish a full body workout -- in anywhere from 10 - 60 minutes depending on the peson's level of expertise inthe Pilates Method.
Workouts are specifically designed for each client's needs and best done one-on-one with a highly trained and qualified teacher, or at least closely supervised by one. As with anything one does, emphasis is on performing the work correctly.
Devotees of the Pilates Method say that without conscious effort, they are walking and sitting straighter and moving more graceful with stronger and better shaped muscles. Results are almost immediate. Joseph Pilates told his students they would feel different after 10 sessions, see a difference after 20 sessions and have an entirely new body after 30 sessions.
About Joseph Hubertus Pilates
Joseph Pilates was born in 1880. He possessed no formal training in medicine. In fact, he was a frail child whose lifelong interest in body conditioning began when he worked to develop his own body. He went on to become a skier, diver and gymnast.
While training to be boxer in England, he taught self-defense to Scotland Yard detectives and performed in the circus. This is where the idea for his chair apparatus came from.
As a nurse in World War I, he experimented with springs attached to hospital beds to allow patients to begin working out before they could get up. His discoveries led him to design the Universal Reformer and the mat exercises that he would bring to America in 1928.
Joseph Pilates opened a studio in New York and the method was immediately used in the world of dance by George Balanchine, Martha Graham, Jerome Robbins and their students. Very protective of his method, he passed it on to very few people. One of his students was Romana Kryzanowska, inheritor and Master teacher of the Pilates Method.
